Sounds familiar, too - you do *not* want to get me started on Autism Speaks, but the short version is that it's a group of parents of autistic children that has actually SUED autistic people to stop them criticizing it. That's the most egregious example, but I'm all too used to the notion that a marginalized group ought to be grateful when other people speak for them on the presumption that they couldn't possibly speak for themselves.

It's certainly not just you! I worked for a time with young autistic people and so many of the parents thought it was all about them while I was trying to empower the young people.......

I moved into that area having previously worked with disabled, terminally ill and abused kids- which burned me out after 20 years.

I always was a sucker for punishment but as you say, give or take some of the parents, it was a grand job! :o)

Feel free to steal the icon- I can't now remember where that one came from. The one above is its equally useful companion :o)

Wow. Not just a sucker for punishment, but someone who could handle incredibly demanding but vitally difficult jobs. And 20 years is about 15 more than most people can take.

The RCP is a bunch if backward looking handjob merchants who really don't get it at all. Indeed, the first major protest by trans people in the UK was years back at another conference by, guess who? You got it! The RCP. I was at that protest and you'd have thought they might have learned something from that embarrassing experience, but no......

We were organising another protest for this conference, but now we may be able to do something more entertaining instead :o)

I think the establishment are finally realising that Teh Tranz do have voices. Some of this I think is that certain members of a certain GIC do mix with Teh Tranz outside of clinical situations and have actually started to listen.
