Replace custom config /etc/motion/motion.cfg?

It’s a simple question, asked by the updater installing the Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade (yes, I’m a little behind the curve on this one) but the thoughts it triggered were anything but. Joy that I no longer feel I have to look over my shoulder all the time. Happiness that I don’t need that program anymore.

Motion is a utility that monitors one or more video sources - if there are changes (meeting a definable criteria) it makes records. I had it saving both individual JPEGs and an MPEG video at two frames per second, and the video source was a Logitech webcam which I had on the mantle. It watched the door to the apartment.

Seven months ago we had an incident that was disturbing for both of us. It had overtones of stalking and it involved someone having access to our apartment (and, yes, we had the locks changed the next day.) For those who were following me on LJ, this is why I suddenly became very quite last December and all my previous posts disappeared - there was small but definitely non-zero reason to think that someone might have connected a little bit of online information to me.

For months I religiously looked around every corner and up/down the breezeway stairwells, etc. I checked the motion logs when I came in - it only ever caught the cat and other occasional natural phenomena, e.g. dancing sunbeams due to wind-blown trees outside and our having forgotten to close the blinds. But still, so long as we lived there, I felt that violation.
